Terrorist

The book I am choosing to read for outside reading, is Terrorist by John Updike. I have read another novel by Updike, called “Villages.” He does a really good job of interpreting his works into fascinating novels. His new book Terrorist, is said to be something he’s never associated with much, which would make it that much more interesting to hear what he has to say about it. Also, I am very curious about this topic, post September 11th, I think it will be very appealing to hear his way of using the language to make it make sense to all sorts of people, such as terrorist themselves, or the victims, or the loved ones of the victims. I hope this book has a lot to offer, as well as helping understand this perspective of a person with this point of view, that Ahmad Mulloy (the main character) may encounter. From the New York Times, it has gotten good reviews, so I’m looking forward to reading it.

I have a love/hate relationship with Updike that goes back to my senior year in college, when I took a course that required me to read something like six of his books, plus pretty much ever book review he ever wrote, in a semester. I haven’t read any of his new stuff, but he used to be the living American master of descriptive writing–when I went to Shillington, PA (his hometown) for 4th of July fireworks, everything was exactly as he’d described it in his books. Enjoy this one and definitely let me know if it’s worth reading.

    hey eliza
I really like what you wrote about Terrorist. Im reading it too and so far it has kept me interested and challenged. Im curious to wonder what John Updike’s book “Villages” was all about and if you enjoyed it. What do you think of Terrorist so far? Does the plot keep you as interested as it does for me?
