Terrorist was a very interesting and different book. Definetly something worth reading, but something I generally wouldn’t pull off the shelf of a book store. It was actually pretty confusing at times because Updike’s use of language is so rich. My expectations were to learn why someone becomes a terrorist and how they get to a point in their life, and are able to give it all up so easily. My interpretation was simply that to them it is God’s will. Updike takes it even further, and not only is it God’s will, but it is the biggest sacrifice the religion makes. It is their life, Allah and the Holy Qu’ran are their life. It is so extreme that it is almost undescribable. Yet Updike manages to portray it in a way that makes it seem like it is another decision in life. Ahmad has to pull himself in one way or the other and it is very interesting how this book ends. I am not sure how I feel about the book all together. It was really interesting and challenging at times to read, and the main character was captured so well. But at the same time Updike’s writing drags on a bit, and there seems to be a lack of dialogue. If you’re someone who is interested in this topic, definetly take a look at it, it opens to a whole new perspective and even though Updike is quite new at this writing, he pieces it together like an expert. As far as Ahmad, he was a very strange character to follow. At sometimes it seemed like I could follow him, but at others it felt like I didn’t get enough of what he was trying to say/do. I think it was interesting how Updike focused on him, even though Ahmad did not say much in the book at all.
