Iraq Discussion
With a brother in Special Forces, I’d like to say lets just leave. However, I think we can only leave when we have an exit strategy. Once the Prime Minister Malaki has settled in, and is doing what is called a “good job” in Iraq, then we can leave. Tom Friedman says in an interview, “The most likely scenario, and for me the preferred one, is that we will have to set a date to leave.” I agree, a set time will make it easier to have a plan and enforce leaving. It will also shorten the time it takes to get Iraq more stable. He also gets a question thrown at him about a draft. Most Americans would say a draft would be terrible, and it is not a good idea. However, I think a draft would awaken our country to realize we are fighting in a war, and make everyone more aware. As well as everyone serving for their country, not only the men and women who are brave enough to, or cannot afford education or to do a different career. I do not think we can build Iraq into this idea of a democracy. I do not think it is right that we impose our values on them either, but there does need to be a way to get them to settle. Once we leave Iraq, the US should focus on Afghanistan because that is now being the forgotten war.
Also, the main reason for entering Iraq was because of the thought of WMD’s. However, those were never found.
“ Iraq had no stockpiles of biological, chemical or nuclear weapons before last year’s US-led invasion, the chief US weapons inspector has concluded….The US and UK used allegations of Iraqi WMDs as a key reason for going war.“
Tom Friedman, multi Pulitzer Prize winner has an interview with the NY Times. http://select.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/timesselect/06friedman-qa.html

I agree with what you said about having to get out of Iraq and wanting to get out of Iraq. I feel like we have been in there too long and have been loosing to many citizens to stay. We never even found weapons of mass destruction to being with, so why are we still there. I had no idea that you had a brother in Special Forces, but knowing that im sure that you want him to just come home, as do millions of other Americans. I am not really sure about your idea for the draft though because that means that many more people will have to go over and fight a pointless war and some of them may die. I think that the people know that we are in a war, and they want us out. I would suggest that we slowly take ourselves out of Iraq so they don’t become dependant on us. I also agree with what you said about how we dont want to impose our values on them either. If we impose too hard they might resent us, as many of them allready do. Its nice to see that you cared so much about our class discussion! : )
Posted November 22, 2006, 11:27 amI think you make some valid points in your Iraq blog, Eliza. I agree that without a proper exit strategy it would be difficult to leave. However, you brought up the issue of a draft and that it could be benefitial.
“However, I think a draft would awaken our country to realize we are fighting in a war, and make everyone more aware. As well as everyone serving for their country, not only the men and women who are brave enough to, or cannot afford education or to do a different career. ”
The thing is though, men and women who can afford an education and have a successful career do not want to go fight in war. I know I wouldn’t. A draft certainly would make people aware that we are fighting a serious war and our boys our getting killed everyday, however, it would change this nation drastically. I would not like a draft.
