I was all ready to write you this nasty comment (something I rarely do to band members) about how indredibly wrong you were, but when I started thinking about it, I couldn't think of any big murder cases involving black people that have captured America's attention for as long as the cases of Jonbenet Ramsey, Martha Moxley, and Mrs. Sam Sheppard, just to name a few. Even the case regarding the shooting of Sean Bell, the black man who was shot by NYPD officers this past November, hasn't been in the papers for a while. As much as I don't want to believe it, you bring up a very interesting point.

The Sony ad certainly is controversial. It definately could be looked at as racist, and therefore it is a shame that Sony would promote such a thing. On the other hand, Dave makes a good point that Sony could be just showing the differences between the models. I thought it was true where he said people try to find racism and that the ad was simply about the aesthetic differences.

I liked your point about how people are almost trying to look for racism. Maybe this says something about our society, are we always looking for flaws in others to make ourselves feel better? Does pointing out somone elses faults, or wrongdoings improve our self image?

I agree with you where you say that satire gets a point across by not starting a structural debate, yet making people feel uncomfortable. That is one of the reasons satire is so effective.

You mentioned that satire is for an audience that can laugh at offensive things. I agree, and I always find myself laughing at South Park or Family Guy, or whatever, but if you think about it, what does satire say about our society. Is America ready to laugh at anything funny, even if it does dive it to controversial and offensive topics.

And Stewart takes it a step beyond just attacking the government; he also goes after the way our media cover the government. That's when his "senior correspondents" are really useful. That English guy they have is especially good at it. Did you see the one from earlier this week when he was using "air quotes" for everything? Classic.

I think you make some valid points in your Iraq blog, Eliza. I agree that without a proper exit strategy it would be difficult to leave. However, you brought up the issue of a draft and that it could be benefitial.

"However, I think a draft would awaken our country to realize we are fighting in a war, and make everyone more aware. As well as everyone serving for their country, not only the men and women who are brave enough to, or cannot afford education or to do a different career. "

The thing is though, men and women who can afford an education and have a successful career do not want to go fight in war. I know I wouldn't. A draft certainly would make people aware that we are fighting a serious war and our boys our getting killed everyday, however, it would change this nation drastically. I would not like a draft.

I agree with what you said about having to get out of Iraq and wanting to get out of Iraq. I feel like we have been in there too long and have been loosing to many citizens to stay. We never even found weapons of mass destruction to being with, so why are we still there. I had no idea that you had a brother in Special Forces, but knowing that im sure that you want him to just come home, as do millions of other Americans. I am not really sure about your idea for the draft though because that means that many more people will have to go over and fight a pointless war and some of them may die. I think that the people know that we are in a war, and they want us out. I would suggest that we slowly take ourselves out of Iraq so they don't become dependant on us. I also agree with what you said about how we dont want to impose our values on them either. If we impose too hard they might resent us, as many of them allready do. Its nice to see that you cared so much about our class discussion! : )

[...] Eliza dug Throne of Blood: It was interesting to watch someone else’s interpretation from a totally different culture. The director did a really good job on the aspects of the set, and making it simple but entertaining for the audience. The mood of the play was also very similar to the mood of the actual Scottish Play. [...]
